It is nice to get out with the camera just to play, and even better when you have a photographer friend from interstate visiting. Andrew Skegg and I stopped by an abandoned mental hospital in New Norfolk. Local legend has it that the place is haunted, however since Andrew and I are both skeptics, we didn’t let the stories stop us. Sadly the place has been vandalised, with graffiti tags everywhere, and hardly a pane of glass unbroken.
Gordon Ramsay could not imagine such a nightmare of a kitchen…

Though the place was still nicely furnished, this armchair sure looks comfy. Now where is the plasma screen?

Abandonments are often used as venues for rave parties, not sure what sort of raving happened here though…

Now what was that about hauntings??

All shots taken with Canon EOS 5D MkII, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, and ambient light.
EDIT: Throwing up a couple more pictures, enjoy!

That last photo of me turned out wonderfully. Climbing into that cramped space was worth it after all

Hi Excellent photos.
I do a lot of paranormal research at Royal Derwent and although I have taken a lot of photos of Royal Derwent and Willow Court in my time these photos are some of the best I have seen.
You probably got these photos just in time because those buildings will be demolished soon.

Nige – if you are planning on heading back up there any time soon drop me a line.
Oh and if you haven’t seen this guy before I suggest you have a look at his photos – very similar style http://www.redbubble.com/people/shepy
Cheers,
Nick.

Nick #1, have sent you email.
Nick Monk, sure, I wouldn’t mind it again soon, especially if any of them are coming down. A few people want to go take some photos but it may be a bit obvious if a large number of people roll up. Might be wise to contact the council and get proper permission. I am sure they wouldn’t mind a bunch of pro and serious photographers documenting the place. Its not like we are dodgy kids going to trash the place… and I guess if the cops rolled up you could help
Yes they are a similar style to Shepy, I had not seen his work before. I have a redbubble account but have not really used it.

The council do not own that side of Royal Derwent It is owned by a developer who wants to tear it down, so I don’t think they mind if people go inside. The Council do however own some wards on the other side. We have tried to speak with themtry try and gain authorised access to the site and even with insurance etc they wouldn’t allow it at this stage.

My Dad used to work there. If those walls could talk. I remember walking through there as a child with him carrying the biggest set of keys id ever seen. Thankfully the life of the people that lived there has changed for the better.
