Well the first ever Targa Wrest Point has been run and won, with the winner Tasmania’s own Greg Garwood and John Allen in the Porsche GT3 RS. Congratulations Greg and John!

Second place was taken by Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett in the new Nissan GTR R35. There was only a 3 second margin here… very close!

The Whites came in 3rd in the Lamborghini Gallardo Supperleggara, only 12 seconds from the win.

Matt Close came in fourth in the black Porsche 911.

Despite looking to still suffer chronic understeer in this shot, the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI of Dean Herridge pulled a very impressive 5th.

Jim Richards and Barry Oliver had to settle for 6th place…

South Australian Steve Glenney won the Classic category in his ’81 Commodore, beating Porsches, Ferraris and all sorts of high-performance cars. Just goes to show its not what you drive, but how you drive it. Getting very sideways in this shot. Well done Steve!

There was a good showing of classic Aussie muscle in the event…

Of course Mozza was there in a Gemini, seems he wasted money buying 4 tyres though…

Skylines, EVOs and STI’s made up a decent portion of the fleet, here we see an R34 GTR.

Beau Johnson in his Subaru Impreza WRX STI…

And Beaus’ brother Troy in his WRX STI! These guys grew up in the next road up from me, we used to hang out a bit together as kids. They were always into motorsport even back then, they started out in Go Karts.

And finally another shot of Liam Coyles WRX STI.

Congratulations to all the participants and organisers of Targa Wrest Point. A great event and I am looking forward to the 2010 event. Oh, and Targa Tasmania in a couple of months time…!

Yeah. There is a sequence of shots of the STI leading up to that one, and you can see more and more lock being wound on and the car getting closer too and crossing the white line… I thought Subaru said they fixed the understeer in those things? Either way, a great result for the car!
And yes the Commodore was definitely a brown undies moment for me, one of a few for the day.

Fixed my understeer too, until I got more power and then the anti-lift kit helped fix it some more. Still, they kept saying how the understeer was gone from this car. Mind you, having watched a few TV reviews I am not so sure. Yet to have a steer of one myself to test it out

Thanks Mozza, you’re a legend mate
Shawrey, thanks for the comments! It makes the hour and a half stand on the side of a cliff waiting for you guys to come past and nearly knock me off worth it, it really does
Wish I could have been competing! Oh well… Next motorsport stop for me looks to be the CMI Collinsvale Hillclimb, if you guys are entering, look out for me on the side of the road!

Hi Nigel. loved the photos which showed up on my desk, this morning. No wonder your client’s comments are so possitive! I would be interrested in buying some, could you advise of price and format(i.e. we would prefer to purchase them on c.d.), also I’m not sure if you have any of Targa Tas? p.s. I beleive you should be the official Targa photographer!

Thanks Vlad. Well it was a team effort, working with Perfect Prints, a team of us running around trying to capture as much as possible. It is far too big a job for one man alone! The other guys did a fantastic job!
Losing those few stages on Saturday arvo didn’t help, but thats racing…
Here is a link to Perfect Prints Targa Wrest Point 2009 page, where you can buy your prints.

Hi Chris
All my photos were in the Perfect Prints bundles
Where is the car and owner based? If in Tassie, I would love to do a shoot some time,

Hi Nigel,
The car is based in Hobart.
The reason for the ask was that the owner got me to drive it on the sunday and his co-driver (Les) stayed in the passengers seat on the sunday and took photo’s from inside the car.
Co-driver Les had his first time in a tarmac event and very much a novice but took photo’s of spectator’s and photographer’s and us passing other competitors on competitive stages, and the speedo showing 200kph which he never saw on the saturday with the owner.
Les was saying a couple of people had taken photo’s in some great location’s in regard to how the car was travelling at those times.
Yes ! just took photo’s and laughted out loud at how much fun, but only ballast.
But made my first time behind the wheel of the most expensive and powerful car l have ever driven so much fun.
one of his comments after Pelverata, you don’t have much compassion for the Pirelli’s! just made me laugh.
Anyway you will get another chance to get some shots next targa wrestpoint when l have a true co-driver in Anne Gigney sitting next to me in Porsche 320.
