I spent a few hours walking around Hobart City today with my friend Thomas Ryan from Launceston who is somewhat the architecture nerd and has a great blog on Art Deco and Modernism architecture in Tasmania which is really worth subscribing to if you are interested in this sort of thing.
We spent some time looking around Domain House and its surrounding buildings, as well as the brand new Menzies Centre building and the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Nice stuff Nige. You are pretty lucky down there although I think Launceston might top Hobart for architectural photography opportunities. Getting cold yet?

Thanks Cam. Yeah Launceston has some great buildings too. The differences in styles of the architecture between either town is actually quite big, which makes it hard to say one is better than the other, they are just different.
Getting cold? You betcha! Though Thomas was wearing shots and thongs or sandals or some such today. I wasn’t though, in my hoodie and jeans and sensible shoes

Thanks Nicole. Yeah I really like that one too. Very different/risky composition, but I think it works

Would have to agree that the styles are just different between cities, and if you take a really good look around Launceston you will be surprised at how many modernist buildings there are too. It’s just that they are not as many tower blocks as there are in Hobart.

Back in my mispent college days, for art I took a punch of pics of various buildings around Hobart. Failed the course because it wasn’t art. :-/ Also, got dragged off by security at the Fed Govt building ‘coz some of the pics had the security cams in it. Good times. Thanks for bringing the memories back!

Thanks Pete. The best photos are often the result of trespass or being somewhere you are not supposed to be.
