Yeah yeah I know I am a geek and a nerd and all of that, so I could not resist bidding on this Steve Jobs plush toy from PodBrix when I saw it on eBay. I could well have been the only person to have spotted it, or maybe just the only person to see it who was geeky enough to want it, because no-one else bidded on it! Which means Steve was all mine for the princely sum of 99c plus $12 postage. WIN!

There is always something to see down at Hobart’s Salamanca Place, and it does not even have to be on market day. Whether you want to take a close look at the details and intricacy of the old buildings that make up the area, or the people that make use of the space, it’s a great place to photograph.

Irish Murphy’s was a venue I spent many a weekend at in my younger days. A great Irish pub, where I learned to appreciate pints of Guinness. One night there was a fire and the place was gutted out. That was pretty devastating, but they rebuilt the place so all was good again. With live music and plenty of people, it was always a good time at Irish.

The buildings at Salamanca Place were the original warehouses for the Hobart wharf, and are therefore very old, mostly sandstone construction. It is always fascinating to look at the back walls of buildings, where the cheaper stone was used, and the blocks are of all different shapes and sizes. Sure the stone would have been cheaper but it must have been a lot more work to build with blocks of differing size.

The morning I was taking these photos, there was a large group of Chinese people rehearsing some movements. They had a big dragon there but I missed it. They performed their thing a few weeks after, but again, I missed it. This is why I am very vague about the whole thing, but I got some nice photos of them anyhow…

This chap seemed to be waiting for his wife or someone. I figure she was in a shop and he didn’t want to go in, and was quietly getting impatient waiting for her return.

The seagulls can be rather tame, mostly because they know they will get a feed. They are quick to jump onto tables to consume peoples scraps.

There was something about this group of people that caught my eye. They were walking towards me in a fashion that I thought was somewhat Tarantino-ish, like they could have been the cast of Reservoir Dogs.

I love Dr Pepper. I was so disappointed when they took it off the market in Australia. A lot of people hate it, and I guess I can see why. Like Guinness and oysters, its a bit of an acquired taste. Oh, and it has to be uber cold when you drink it, or else it really does taste like cough medicine.

Anyhow, there are still a few places around who sell it, but they are few and far between. These places are selling imported product, canned in the good old USA. Strangely the American soft drink cans are smaller (355ml) than the standard 375ml Aussie can, which is unusual considering the American “Super size” culture. Maybe the 355ml can is a small one, and there’s a larger can size available over there. Who knows.

Oh the other thing that is annoying about these imports is the cost, these cans are $2.75 each from Sweets on Murray in Hobart, but as a treat, its worth it. Yum!

If you love Dr Pepper too, you might be interested in checking out this thread on Dr Pepper in Australia on the Dr Pepper Facebook group.

It is nice to get out with the camera just to play, and even better when you have a photographer friend from interstate visiting. Andrew Skegg and I stopped by an abandoned mental hospital in New Norfolk. Local legend has it that the place is haunted, however since Andrew and I are both skeptics, we didn’t let the stories stop us. Sadly the place has been vandalised, with graffiti tags everywhere, and hardly a pane of glass unbroken.

Gordon Ramsay could not imagine such a nightmare of a kitchen…

For this photo, I should write something deep about what to do when life presents you with no simple way forward, and how you have to make a decision about breaking a rule in order to move on. Some times in life, there is no obvious way to move ahead. You reach a point where you must stop, assess the situation, calculate your risks, weigh up the pros and cons, and then, just go for it! And trust me, whenever you make such a decision in your life, it will either change things for the better more than you could have hoped, or, bang you get wiped out by a Kenworth barrelling down the highway with its speed limiter removed.

That you probably couldn’t see because of all of the signs on the road.

But I am not that deep. Here is the pic…
