Today I visited the New Sydney Hotel for lunch with some fellow nerds. On the way in I stopped to check out a nice big hole in the ground. Big holes have always fascinated me, so I really could not resist. Even better, there was an excavator working. The big hole is along the Brooker Highway, between the Tasmanian Polytechnic building and the Hobart Officeworks store. This space has been occupied by a car park behind some old original cottages in Campbell St. As for what they are doing there, I have no idea.

I looked straight down from where I stood against the fence, and it is really a very deep hole. There were markings on the ground leading to a manhole shaft so I guess they are going to be adding some drainage. Will be interesting to watch.

After I turned to leave I noticed something very cool. Someone had come along and inserted a heap of plastic cups into the fence, and spelt out the words “I FEEL EMPTY”.

Both photos taken with the Hipstamatic camera app on an iPhone 4.

I spent a few hours walking around Hobart City today with my friend Thomas Ryan from Launceston who is somewhat the architecture nerd and has a great blog on Art Deco and Modernism architecture in Tasmania which is really worth subscribing to if you are interested in this sort of thing.

We spent some time looking around Domain House and its surrounding buildings, as well as the brand new Menzies Centre building and the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Spent the weekend just gone in Sydney with my wife Melissa. We headed up to see the Top Gear Live show at Acer Arena, which was tremendous fun of course. Since it was just an overnight stay we decided to travel light, which even meant no cameras *cry* so we made do with our iPhones and the great new camera app called Hipstamatic, which does its best to simulate various old lenses and films, along with flash gels.

Taken in the Sydney Domestic Airport Train Station

One of the cool things is that the effect is applied when you take the photo (you select a film, lens and flash gel type before you shoot) and therefore the photo is what it is, the effects are not an afterthought or tweaked to look “right”, you have to actually think about what look you want before you take the picture, and know what combination of lens, film and flash to put on the camera to get the look.

Just like in the olden days.

It is (almost) all the fun and unpredictability of shooting with a Holga, without the high cost of medium format film. Yeah yeah I know its not the same, but for messing about its fun. I just wish I had an iPhone 3GS, as my iPhone 3G does not have the ability to focus. Never mind, new one in a few months…

Bird cages suspended over a side street, commenting on endangered bird species in Australia

As Chase Jarvis says, “the best camera is the one you have on you” so I may just blog a few more iPhone photos in the future, since it is after all always in my pocket, a place my 5D MkII just wont fit…

I love my plastic “toy” cameras, I am slowly building a collection of them, the latest being a Lomography Diana F+ Edelweiss Edition.

Cremorne Beach, just out of Hobart

I love the soft dreamy, surreal look of the images from the crummy plastic lens on cameras like this and my Holga 120CFN. The randomness of focus, composition and exposure -these cameras have no light meter and only basic exposure settings, though the Diana is somewhat more sophisticated than the Holga – the vignetting and the light leaks all add to the fun.

My little photography assistant, Lucas, at the West Hobart Train Park

I can run regular 35mm though the cameras but they are designed to use medium format film. If you use 35mm film,, you miss out on the wonderful vignetting and softness around the corners of the lens.

Bathurst St, Hobart

However the cost of this film and its associated developing and scanning mean using these cameras with this film can be a fairly expensive. Each shot can work out to cost about $4 or $5, and you have to think twice about taking a shot, where as ideally you wouldn’t think about shooting with such a camera. Still, these cameras are great fun and a nice bit of relief from the seriousness of modern DSLR photography.

We got to the summit of Mt Wellington, admired the view and then concluded it was far too cold for our 30 something bones, so we were soon back in the car looking for a warmer location. We ended up at the eastern shore end of the Tasman Bridge.

Long hand held exposures, lots of lights and zoom lenses are good fun.

Finally, a shot looking down the Derwent River towards the Hobart CBD and Wrest Point Casino.

Well it has been super busy in the world of Nigel Honey Photos and I have a few things to blog, and some are actually going back a little while now partly because I have been slack, and other things have had to go to print before I blogged them. Anyhow… Tonight Mel, Lucas and I headed to “The Flight of the Snow Petrels” Children’s Parade, part of the Antarctic Midwinter Festival.

A large procession of drummers, and people with large penguin shaped lanterns left the wharf near the School of Arts, in Hunter St, and headed around to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, where those that got there early enough could see some fire twirling and fire eating. It was a bit of a battle to get through the crowd to get a few shots, but I got there and thanks to the low light ability of the Canon 5D MarkII I grabbed a couple of shots and got out of the way of the crowd I had pushed through to get to the front of.

After this, the show moved into the courtyard at the museum but we could not stay as the large animal costumes were scaring Lucas. Was certainly a different way to spend a Friday evening.

Just been going through some stuff from the past few months that has not been blogged or published before. This one is the first shot I took with my Canon EOS 5D MkII. As you do when you get a new camera, you throw a lens on and go for a walk down the street, and the first image on the camera was this shot of the road markings on the corner into my cul-de-sac.
